Description:  

Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) is considered the most common, curable sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States with a prevalence estimated at 8.7% in woman aged 18-81.  Approximately 50% who tested positive had no symptoms.   A unine culture can detect the presence of a trich parasite which can be cured with antibiotics.  

 

 When to Test:

If you are sexually active, pregnant or considering pregnancy, or at increased risk for this sexually transmitted disease (STD); if you are a woman with symptoms of infection, such as a strong-smelling vaginal discharge, genital itching, and/or pain during urination; if you are a man who has the frequent urge to urinate and/or a discharge from the urethra.

 

Testing Procedure:

A sample of urine is required to test for Trichomoniasis.  It is recommended to not urinate for at least one hour prior to supplying the urine sample.
